Sensual Arousal is a stimulating lubricant meant for both partners at once. The manufacturer describes it as dispensing as a gel and liquefying with friction — the idea being that it stays where you put it and starts working only once there is movement. The bottle has a spill-proof cap and travels well.

The stimulating side comes from menthol, peppermint oil and vanillyl butyl ether, which give a cooling and warming sensation, together with Butea Superba and niacin. The base is water, glycerin and aloe leaf juice. The formula also contains dimethicone, which is a silicone — it gives the glide its staying power, but it also brings one important limitation.

One word in the ingredient list tends to raise questions, so here it is in plain terms. Dimethicone, or dimethylsiloxane, is a synthetic silicone compound: a colourless, transparent oily liquid that is chemically stable and does not go rancid on the skin. It does not absorb into the deeper layers of the skin but stays on the surface as a thin film that still lets the skin breathe. The same substance is used in skincare creams, nappy creams and pharmacy products. In a lubricant it does two things: the glide lasts longer than in a pure water-based product, and the feel is silkier.

**This lubricant is not suitable for silicone toys.** Silicone dissolves silicone and the surface of the toy can turn tacky. Glass, metal and ABS plastic are fine, and it is compatible with latex condoms. Fifty-nine millilitres is a trial size rather than a month's supply.
