The seam up the back is the oldest trick in hosiery and still the most effective one. It began as a manufacturing necessity, when stockings were cut flat and sewn into a tube, and it survived the technology that made it unnecessary purely because of what it does to the eye: one continuous vertical line from the heel upward, which the gaze follows the whole way and reads as length. Nothing else in a wardrobe lengthens a leg so cheaply.

Straight seams are a two-minute job and the whole effect depends on them. Put both stockings on loosely, stand with your weight even, and then twist each one a few degrees at a time until the line sits over the centre of the heel and runs up behind the calf. Check them in a mirror from behind rather than guessing, and re-check after you sit down for the first time.

These are for the outfit that wants an old-film silhouette: a pencil skirt, a dress with a hem at the knee, a seam disappearing under it.
